Chapter Thirteen

“I don’t know how you did it,” said Amara the next morning, as we were at the headquarters on the Fourth Circle. “But as of this morning, just about all the remaining holdouts of the nephilim have now moved to the safety of the Second Circle, my parents included.”

“That’s a relief,” I said as Amara hugged my side. “Part of me felt like I might have been too hard on them.”

“Not hard enough,” she grumbled. “They needed to get bitch-slapped by reality. It was the only way we could save their lives.”

“Have you talked to your parents since?”

Amara shook her head. “Our relationship is still just as tenuous as it always is, but I’ll sleep better knowing they’re safe.”

“I will too, especially since they’re your parents.”

Amara leaned up and kissed me. “Thank you for what you did. You have no idea how grateful I am that you were there.”

“You could always show me,” I said, giving her a weak smile.

Amara moaned and gave me a passionate kiss. “There’s the man I love. I’ve been missing him for some time.”

“I’ve been right here the whole time.”

She shook her head. “No, the real you has been consumed by the war. You have a thousand obligations on your shoulders right now, and I can tell it’s wearing on you. It’s nice to see a shade of the real you, even if it’s only temporary.”

“I could use a day off,” I joked. “Maybe take some time with all the girls. I don’t see how right now, but I’d love to have some time to ourselves.”

“When all of this is over, we’re going to take an extended vacation,” she promised.

“Any place you had in mind?”

Amara started tapping her lips. “Stella just raves about the time her family went to Barcelona over the summer.”

“You, me, and all the girls in Barcelona sounds like a little slice of heaven.”

“In actuality, I’ll take any place that has a bed,” said Amara, giving me a heated look. “That’s all I need to stay happy.”

That was an idea that I would have loved to explore more. The idea of Amara’s perfectly-nude body laying on my bed was so enticing that I might have freed up some time in my schedule to make it a reality, but other events would soon ensure that it would stay just a thought.

Those other events were kicked off by a series of explosions that rocked our headquarters, to the point that it felt like we were suffering a massive earthquake.

“Amara!” I yelled, once I saw part of the tent collapse on us, removing the platinum blonde from my sight. I had to fight my way through canvas as the ground around me shook, making it hard to keep my balance. I used fire mana to shoot through the material, allowing me to reconnect with Amara underneath.

By the time we were free, I could tell that this was the big one. Looking down below, where the tunnels connected the Fourth Circle to the Fifth, I could see thousands of oni demons spilling onto the plain, where they engaged with our legionaries.
